Rhona Weinstein (Department of Psychology), Frank Worrell (Graduate School of Education) and Gail Kaufman (Center for Educational Partnerships) in conversation about their recent book Achieving College Dreams: How a University-Charter District Partnership Created an Early College High School (Oxford University Press, 2016). Joining the conversation will be Xavier Taylor, a graduate of CAL Prep.

Introduced by Prudence Carter, Dean of the Graduate Schoo of Education.


There will be ample time for audience questions and participation. 

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the talk.

Edited by Professors Rhona S. Weinstein (Psychology) and Frank C. Worrell (Graduate School of Education), this book tells the story of a remarkable 10-year collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley and Aspire Public Schools to develop and nurture the California College Preparatory Academy (CAL Prep). Framed by a longitudinal lens, findings from community-engaged scholarship, and a diversity of voices from students to superintendents, it charts the journey from the initial decision to open the school to the high school graduation of its first two classes. Readers are taken inside the workings of the partnership, the development of the school, and the spillover of effects across district and university.

In a recent review of the book in PsychCRITIQUES (August 15, 2016), Professor Kathleen Sullivan Brown writes:
 "This was and is an ambitious project that looks seriously at the nexus of secondary education, teacher education, university research on schools and curriculum, and the divide between universities and secondary education...The school faced all the risks and challenges of any urban school including violence and disruptive behavior.  The book gives hope, however, that a well thought-out approach to the whole student and a long-term commitment from institutions, educators, and funders can make a powerful difference in what too many see as an intractable problem in American education...There should be a large audience for this edited volume including university faculty and administrators, educators in the schools, and (I hope) philanthropists that are directing resources toward closing the achievement gap."
