History 101: Getting Help

Research Advisory Service

Research Advisory Service for Cal Undergraduates

Book a 30-minute appointment with a librarian who will help refine and focus research inquiries, identify useful online and print sources, and develop search strategies for humanities and social sciences topics (examples of research topics).

Schedule, view, edit or cancel your appointment online (CalNetID required)

This service is for Cal undergraduates only. Graduate students and faculty should contact the library liaison to their department or program for specialized reference consultations.

Ask a Librarian 24/7 Chat

You can type your question directly into this chat window to chat with a librarian. Your question may be answered by a reference librarian from Berkeley, from another UC campus, or another academic library elsewhere in the US.  We share information about our libraries to make sure you get good answers.

If the librarian can't answer you well enough, your question will be referred to a Berkeley librarian for follow-up.

Digital toolsNon-Coders' Guide to the Web

  1. How the Web Works - Learn about algorithms, platforms, databases, search engines, and URLs to better understand how information moves online.
  2. Creating Web Content - Explore basic web elements like HTML, CSS, and how to use your Gmail editor to create richer multimedia content.
  3. Remixing Online Content - How to seamlessly (and ethically) integrate images and text from others into your own online work.

Weeding Out BS

Avoid falling victim to BS (bad sources) by carefully considering the source of information, the information context, and how you interact with information on platforms such as Facebook.

Research Survival Guide

You already know how to search... but research requires skills that don't involve searching at all. This short guide will help you get started with research at Cal, along with five simple tips to survive (and thrive) in your research.

Want to meet?

You are always welcome to schedule an appointment with me any time I am available -- I don't have set office hours. Use https://calendly.com/dorner to make an appointment and it will automatically be put on my calendar. No need to email me first asking for a meeting!

Library Proxy

  • You no longer need to configure a browser to use the Library Proxy.
  • When you click on a resource link found in OskiCat, via "Start your search" on the Library home page, Databases A-Z or eJournals (UC eLinks), you will be prompted to authenticate. You may authenticate via CalNet, or via your PIN / Cal 1 card number.
  • When you click on a resource link found via a search engine or a non-UCB Library webpage, you will need to use a bookmarklet to access the licensed resource.

Library Workshops

The Library offers workshops throughout the term on topics as varied as software tools, digital scholarship, reference managers, finding and working with data, and how to do research. Find a list of upcoming workshops at http://ucblib.link/workshops.
