United Nations and Civil Society

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the main body of the United Nations with which NGOs have consultative status. Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) information on the Internet can be located using the following directories  and the NGO search engine below.

​Coaltion for the International Criminal Court.  Includes 2,500 civil society organizations in 150 different countries working in partnership to strengthen international cooperation with the ICC.

The Global Compact.  UN compact with businesses worldwide to address principles in the fields of human rights, labour, the environment and corruption.

Global Center for the Responsibility to Protect.  International NGO created to "transform the principle of the responsibility to protect into a practical guide for action in the face of mass atrocities."

Integrated Civil Society Information Database. Provides general profiles for civil society organizations, including address, contacts, activities and meeting participation, etc.

International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect.  Coalition bringing together NGOs from all regions of the world to strengthen normative consensus for RtoP,

International Peace Institute. Independent, international not-for-profit think tank dedicated to promoting the prevention and settlement of conflicts between and within states by strengthening international peace and security institutions.

NGOs Associated with the UN Department of Public Information. Directory of over 1,400 NGOs affiliated with the UN Department of Public Information.

NGOs with Consultative Status with the UN Economic & Social Council. Includes la searcg engine and listing of NGOS with UN ECOSOC counsultative status, reports, and other links.

UN Democracy Fund.  A UN General Trust Fund whose chief function is funding projects that strengthen the voice of civil society in democratic processes around the world.

United Nations Foundation. Foundation created in 1998 from Ted Turner's one billion gift to support UN causes and activities.

United Nations and Civil Society. Gateway site to various elements of the UN involved in partnerships with civil society: business, the media, and NGOs.

United Nations Fund for International Partnerships. UN liaison office for the United Nations Foundation - "the UN and the private sector working together."

United Nations/NGO Liaison Service. Small office promoting partnerships between the United Nations and non-governmental organizations.

UN Reform

Center for UN Reform Education.  Independent non-profit policy research organization working to encourage, generate and sustain discussion of proposals to reform and restructure the United Nations through its website; its monographs, papers and books; and conferences.

Free United Nations Coalition for Access.  Aims to hold the UN to its stated purposes, by making it transparent and accessible without discrimination.

Inner City Press.UN investigative reporting service based in New York City, it also investigates human rights, transparency, corporate accountability, community reinvestment, predatory lending, environmental justice, fair housing, and social exclusion.

Security Council Report. Publishes monthly reports on the prospective program of work of the Security Council supplemented by longer published reports and ad hoc reports on key thematic issues on the agenda of the Council.
