Menches, Komogrammateus of Kerkeosiris by
This is the first study of Menches, village scribe (komogrammateus) of Kerkeosiris between 120 and 110 B.C., on the basis of the complete body of documents from his archive. The author first presents and discusses the only source material: the papyri found inside crocodile mummies at the Egyptian village Tebtunis during the winter of 1899/1900.After establishing the precise nature of these papyrus documents, the book goes on to explore what we can learn from them about Menches' (re)appointments to the post of village scribe; his position in the Ptolemaic bureaucracy; his contacts - written and otherwise - with peers and superiors; his day-to-day tasks, mainly concerned with fiscal land administration; and, in a final chapter, his dealings with a 'strike' of colleague village scribes and a 'strike' of farmers at his village.

The book (re)publishes and newly interprets five accounts from the second century BCE Menches Papers. The book offers an imaginative historical reading of the accounts, detailing how in Ptolemaic Egypt various government officials on tour through the country side were received in one specific village (Kerkeosiris) by the local official (village scribe). The accounts also give insight into part of the financial management of the office of village scribe.

This book is the edition of any kind of text written or incised on various types of vessels found at Tebtynis during the excavations of the joined Mission of Universita di Milano and Ifao under the directorship of Professor Claudio Galazzi. At present this publication includes treatment of 820 pieces found from 1997 to 2003 mostly in ancient debris deposits of in destroyed layers by the work of previous excavators or farmers. Considering that this is the first book to group and present these texts, the introduction contains a list of published or described notations of this type from Egypt and a method to identify a text as a "vessel's notation". The majority of these texts consist solely of personal or place names, dates and indications of the content of the vessel, the capacity etc. The date ranges from the second half of the third century BC to the third century AD (with a few in the fourth and fifth century AD). The absolute dating proposed here has been established base on palaeographical details (considering the small amount of texts or the fragmentary character of many of the texts), the stratigraphy and the pottery. The volume includes photographs of all the published pieces and, where it was possible, a drawing of the vessel type has been made.

The abundant material discovered at Tebtynis includes few hieroglyphic or Aramaic texts, hieratic ostraca, graffiti, inscriptions, texts on stamps, seals, bones or glass. Nonetheless, these inscriptions are of interest and the present volume aims at gathering and classifying them, according to their language, the type of inscription and the material used. Indexes complete the classification. Thanks to this presentation, the reader interested in a particular type of text will easily find them grouped together here and anyone studying Tebtynis will have easy access to all the information these pieces offer about the village. In order to facilitate studies on Tebtynis and to avoid the scattering of works on the village, an appendix devoted to the papyri of Soknebtynis, one of the major legacies of the site to modern science, has been included in this volume.
