History 103D Contesting the American Past: Getting Help

Research Advisory Service

Research Advisory Service for Cal Undergraduates

Book a 30-minute appointment with a librarian who will help refine and focus research inquiries, identify useful online and print sources, and develop search strategies for humanities and social sciences topics (examples of research topics).

Schedule, view, edit or cancel your appointment online (CalNetID required)

This service is for Cal undergraduates only. Graduate students and faculty should contact the library liaison to their department or program for specialized reference consultations.

Ask a Librarian 24/7 Chat

You can type your question directly into this chat window to chat with a librarian. Your question may be answered by a reference librarian from Berkeley, from another UC campus, or another academic library elsewhere in the US.  We share information about our libraries to make sure you get good answers.

If the librarian can't answer you well enough, your question will be referred to a Berkeley librarian for follow-up.

Weeding Out BS

Avoid falling victim to BS (bad sources) by carefully considering the source of information, the information context, and how you interact with information on platforms such as Facebook.

Research Survival Guide

You already know how to search... but research requires skills that don't involve searching at all. This short guide will help you get started with research at Cal, along with five simple tips to survive (and thrive) in your research.

Office Hours

You are always welcome to schedule an appointment to meet with me in the Doe Library any time I am available. From September 20 - December 6, you can also find me in 3223 Dwinelle on Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00.

Proxy server

Set up the proxy server to use library databases from off-campus. This will change your browser or OS settings.

  • There are set-up instructions for different browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari...)
  • You can set it up on multiple devices
  • You log in with your CalNet ID
  • There's an alternative: the VPN
