Achieve a sustainable budget that supports research and teaching at UCB, in the face of current budget reductions, ever-increasing costs, and the campus need for new types of materials. Fairly distribute cuts among disciplines.
We will seek ways to meet our campus-mandated budget reduction target by a) seeking new sources of funding, b) reducing staffing and operational expenditures, and c) reducing expenditures on scholarly resources. To minimize the impact of our reduced expenditures on scholarly resources, we are reviewing vendor discount agreements; renegotiating Berkeley's UC consortial cost-shares and commitments; engaging in regional, national, and international partnerships to facilitate broad access to, and effective stewardship of library resources; discontinuing some subscriptions; and reducing spending for monographs.
May - September 2017: Library management develops goals, principles, and rationale for assigning cut targets among The Bancroft Library, and the subject specialty libraries for the Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Physical Sciences, Life & Health Sciences, Social Sciences, and East Asia.
October - January 2018: UL MacKie-Mason advises campus leadership. Library selectors are provided support as they create plans to meet their group targets. Serials being considered for cancellation will be identified after careful, evidence-based balancing of need and costs. Proposed lists of cancellations will be cross-reviewed for interdisciplinary needs.
February - April 6,2018: Faculty and graduate students are asked to review and provide feedback to subject librarians on proposed cancellations.
April 6 - May 15, 2018: Cancellation lists will be finalized. See Proposed Savings.
June 1: Plans will be implemented.
