Finding UCB Library Books Online during the Shutdown

  • Search OskiCat;  pull down the "entire collection" menu to "available online" to find e-books.
    • If the book is listed in  OskiCat but only in print form, click on the Hathi Trust button to redo the search in Hathi Trust (see below)undefined
  • Search Hathi Trust for books available through Temporary Emergency Access Services (about) (how to).

 Log in, then select UC Berkeley from the list of institutions.  Look for items with "full text" or "temporary access".  You may check out the item for one hour (renewable if you are actively. using it).  UPDATE:  downloading is no longer allowed.  See the "how to" for more information.

  • In the OskiCat record, click on the MELVYL icon to redo the search in MELVYL (catalog for all 10 UC campuses).  Click on the Request button - the InterLibrary Loan office will try to obtain scans of some chapters for you.

  • or you can request an article or book chapter through Interlibrary Borrowing.
  • See the Library's guide to ebooks  - most ebooks are listed in OskiCat but the newest ones may not be.  Search each ebook provider separately to look for the latest titles.
  • If you need a book we do not already own (either as a print book or as an ebook) fill out the purchase recommendation form.
  • If you think a public library might own the book, check your local public library's ebook collection.

To find books, DVDs, maps, sound recordings, manuscripts, and much more - everything except articles - use a library catalog.

OskiCat = most UC Berkeley libraries

MELVYL = all UC campus libraries, including all UC Berkeley libraries

For each item make sure you know the name of the physical library, call number, and whether or not it's checked out, library use only, etc.

Call numbers are on the spine of the book; learn how to read them so you can find what you need on the shelves.

UC Library Search Request Link

No time to go hunting around the library stacks to find the books you need?  Use UC Library Search to find the book you want,. Authenticate yourself with CalNet, and follow the prompts. UC Library Search will ask you where you want the book(s) delivered to.  You will get an email when the books are ready to be picked up (usually within 1-3 days).

You can also use this button to:

  • Request materials from NRLF
  • Place holds on items that are checked out
  • Place holds on an item. 

Getting material from NRLF (short)

The Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) is an off-campus storage facility for some library collections. NRLF materials are available to request in UC Library Search.

  • Borrow print materials from NRLF in UC Library Search. 
  • Receive electronic or paper copies of book chapters or journal articles in eligible titles in UC Library Search.
