The Cased Photographs Project provides access to digital images and detailed descriptions of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and related photographs in the collections of The Bancroft Library and the California State Library.

The main goals of this project were to preserve these exceedingly rare and significant pictorial documents, many of which date from the era of the California Gold Rush, as the first step in the creation of a comprehensive state-wide digital collection of cased photographs. The project was carried out in 1999-2000 with support from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

The project also resulted in archival finding aids with linked digital images which are still available as part of the Online Archive of California (OAC). The project also demonstrates how the Bancroft library and the OAC were at the forefront of providing digital access to pictorial collections.

The Honeyman Collection of Western Art Digital Archiving Project was the first digitization project funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the California State Library in 1998. The project resulted in the digitization of the entirety of the Robert B. Honeyman, Jr. collection which features over 2300 items dated from circa 1790 to circa 1900, including original oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, ephemera and other materials related to the settlement of the American West, with emphasis on California and the Gold Rush period. The project is notable not only for the breadth of materials in the Honeyman collection but also for The Bancroft Library’s early contribution of the materials to the Museums and the Online Archive of California (MOAC) and the Online Archive of California (OAC) respectively to make materials accessible using standardized metadata practices.
