Public Policy189/Social Welfare 181: In Class Exercise

Finding studies of community-oriented policing

FIRST ASSIGN A REPORTER

Choose a reporter.  The reporter's responsibility is to 1) write the names of all group members who participated in the activity, and then 2) provide the group's response the three questions below, in this discussion thread.

THEN, LAUNCH YOUR SEARCH

One suggested police reform is "community-based policing" or "community-oriented policing."  Your task is to define community-based policing and then find some peer-reviewed, published studies that test its value and impact.  The best studies are quasi-experiments or field experiments that evaluate this proposed policing reform - see if you can find any.  Note: it may work best for you each to search independently for a few minutes, compare your results, and repeat (time permitting).

FINALLY, HELP YOUR REPORTER ADDRESS THESE QUESTIONS

1) Define community-based policing or community-oriented policing.

2) Describe the studies that you found.  How many are there?  What do they focus on?

3) Provide citations or links for the three best studies you found.
