Who can access OverDrive?
Any current UC Berkeley faculty, student or staff member can borrow books from OverDrive.

How do I read books on OverDrive?

How do I check out books?
Visit OverDrive at UC Berkeley and borrow by logging in with your Cal username and password.

Do I need to create an OverDrive account?
You do not need to create a separate OverDrive account. Your Cal credentials are enough.

Do I have to download any software or apps to use OverDrive?
No. You can read and listen to books right in your browser. If you wish to use OverDrive on your phone, mobile device, or ereader, some additional set-up may be required.

How long can I borrow books?
Most loan periods are 21 days. You may choose a shorter borrowing period. Materials will be returned automatically -- no action on your part is required. No late fees.

How many books can I borrow at one time?
You can borrow up to 5 books at once.

How do I renew books?
Before a book is due, you will have the option to renew from your Loans page when logged into your OverDrive account. If there are holds on the book, you can request the book again.

How do I return books?
You don't need to do anything to return books. They will simply expire when the loan period is over. However, you can return a book early. Visit your Loans page when logged into your OverDrive account.

How can I place a hold on a book?
If a book is checked out by another patron, simply put a hold on the book in OverDrive. You will receive an email when the book is available. You may place a hold on up to 10 books at a time.

Are all formats available for all books?
Format availability varies by book.

Who provides OverDrive?
The Library subscribes to OverDrive, which is an ebook and audiobook platform owned by the Rakuten company.
