Resources for research in sociology

Doing a literature review

  • You will probably find yourself looking at the research literature (articles, books, reports, etc.) at several stages of your paper.
  • To find a topic to research, you want to know what the gaps are in the literature
  • Once you've picked your topic, you will look at the literature to see which methods work the best for exploring it
  • When you're writing your paper, you will write a review of the literature showing the reader how your topic fits in
  • These resources will help:
  • Improving your library database and catalog search skills (keywords, finding sources, peer review)
  • The lit review page in the main Sociology Library Research Guide
  • These slides from a recent UCB library workshop for sociology students, which go more into depth about doing a lit review
  • Getting up to speed with a citation manager such as Zotero (there's a learning curve, but it will save A LOT of time later)
  • If you get stuck, check out the "Get Help" tab above, and contact a librarian for assistance!

Access online resources

There are two ways to connect to library resources from off-campus.

  1. Use UC Library Search and other library websites to look up licensed (subscribed) resources. Links listed on these sites prompt users to login with CalNet.
  2. To access library resources found via non-UCB sites such as Google, Google Scholar, email links, Twitter, etc, you can add the EZProxy bookmarklet to your browser. Then, whenever you land on a licensed library resource, select your EZproxy bookmarklet to enable CalNet.

Using EZ Proxy to access resources

The EZProxy bookmarklet adds the library's EZProxy prefix to a URL. Use it to license library resources from off campus.

To set up the EZProxy you will need to make sure your browser is configured to:

  • Allow pop-up windows.
  • Accept third-party cookies.
  • Enable javascript.

The bookmarklet can be added iOS, Android and most browsers including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, IE.

Drag the EZproxy UCB link to your browser's Bookmark toolbar.

If you used to log in via the old proxy be sure to disable it on your browser. Consult Remove the old proxy from a browser guide for instructions.
