Zotero is a freely available citation manager and includes:

  • importing of citations from most article databases (including PubMed), Google Scholar, Start Your Search, and the library's Melvyl catalog.
  • automatic citation and reference-list formatting when you write documents in MS Word, OpenOffice or Google Docs
  • Create groups with users within and outside of UCB to share references
  • library and user community support.
  • 300 MB of free storage. For more storage, sync Zotero with Google Drive, Berkeley Box, Dropbox, or other compatible cloud storage using a third-party plugin.

 

To download and install Zotero:

  1. Go to zotero.org and click on the Download button.
  2. Zotero will detect your operating system; click the Download button or select a different operating system.
  3. Follow the installation instructions for your operating system.
  4. Be sure to download the Zotero connector for your browser.
  5. You're ready to begin saving references!

Importing citations to Zotero

Saving PubMed search results to Zotero:

  1. Open Zotero on your computer
  2. Click the folder icon at the top left to create and name a new Zotero collection.
  3. In your browser, from any PubMed search results page click the Zotero Connector icon at top right. On a page with multiple results the Zotero icon will appear as a folder. 
  4. Select the citations you wish to import to Zotero by clicking the checkbox next to the title.
  5. Click OK and select the collection to which you would like to save the results
  6. The citations will be added to Zotero along with PDFs by default if Zotero can find them (you can change this in Zotero preferences).
