NEU 171L: Neurobiology Laboratory: Write & cite with Zotero

Inserting and formatting citations and bibliographies

Most citation managers work with word processing programs to enable you to quickly insert and format in-text citations and bibliographies while writing a paper. Zotero can be used with bDrive/Google Docs, MS Word and LibreOffice. Documents created in bDrive/Google Docs can be downloaded as MS Word documents or PDFs.

Please note: The output of citation managers, as with all automated output, must be checked for accuracy and corrected manually if necessary. To check the auto-generated citations, compare them to the examples on the Citing sources page.

Please note: If the citation style you are using requires journal title abbreviations (e.g., Journal of Cell Biology style), in the Zotero tab or toolbar in your word processor click on Document Preferences. When Zotero's dialog box opens, select the appropriate citation style from the list and check the Use MEDLINE journal abbreviations option, and click OK:

Zotero will then supply the journal title abbreviation for your citations from the NLM Catalog, rather than using the "Journal Abbr" field downloaded with the citation (which is sometimes blank or incorrect).

If the citation style you wish to use does not appear in the Citation Style list, click the Manage Styles link and then Get additional styles. Search for the style you need using the search box; when it appears in the results list, click on it. It will be added to the Citation Style list and can then be selected as a Document Preference.
