The Gold Rush Economy

The rapid influx of hundreds of thousands of people brought new opportunities to strike it rich, not from the gold itself, but from the gold prospectors. New settlements near the gold fields were hastily built as prospectors arrived by the thousands, and with this came an explosion in demand for basic goods and services. Many mercantile businesses formed to cater to the needs of the forty-niners at every step of their venture. The formerly small settlement of San Francisco saw its population grow from 1,000 in 1848 to 25,000 by December 1849, becoming the major hub of business activity during the Gold Rush.
