People of the Gold Rush
People came to California from all around the world, speaking many different languages, and having different cultural norms, which often lead to instances of bigotry and violence. The majority of our gold rush collections are from the perspective of newly-arrived white settlers, and when they made notable mention of other non-white ethnic groups, such as the Chinese, Mexicans, or the indigenous peoples of California, their descriptions were usually derogatory. Unfortunately, this is case for many of our primary source materials that document these groups in California during this period. Despite this, they still provide valuable insight to those seeking to learn about California society during the gold rush years. The items listed below, while not an exhaustive list, all make notable mention of non-white ethnic groups in some capacity.
