Social Welfare 220: Introduction to Social Welfare Policy: APA Citation

Legal Citation with APA

How to create legal citations in APA can be challenging, especially for state materials (federal is more standardized.)

Using APA Style for Citation

APA Citation Style does not have a separate format for government publications, they recommend instead that you look at the type of material and site it as you would any other books, journal, reports, etc. Legal material is specialized -- here's a guide to citing statutes (laws) and how to cite cases.

"Cheat Sheets" -- very handy guides showing examples of the different types of citations formatted according to APA 6th, from Wake ForestPurdue and Harvard.

The fulltext of APA 6th is not available online, but we do have print copies in the reference collection of the Social Welfare Library at BF76.7 P83 2010, and it's available at other libraries on campus as well.

Basics of APA Style -- tutorial from APA on how to how to structure and format your work, reduce bias in language, avoid charges of plagiarism, cite references in text and it  provides selected reference examples. The APA Style Blog --  is searchable by topic and contains weekly posts by APA experts .

Citation Management Tools: Zotero

Citation management tools help you manage your research, collect and cite sources, and create bibliographies in a variety of citation styles.  Zotero is free software that you can install on your computer -- it helps organize your research, and then connects to Word to makes it much easier to create in-text citations and bibliographies. The library has created a self-paced tutorial as well as this handy guide to using Zotero -- including add-ons that allow you to edit pdfs

It's always good to double check the formatting -- none of the software is perfect!

Zotero workshops!

The Library offers workshops -- in person and via Zoom -- on using Zotero. Check the calendar for options! If none of these work for you, we can schedule individually.
