Helpful hints for planning a visit to The Bancroft Library

How to Find Materials

The UC Berkeley Library catalog, OskiCat, provides collection level descriptions of most Bancroft materials.

Finding aids are guides to archival collections. Finding aids provide detailed descriptions of collections, their intellectual organization, and individual items or groups of items in collections. They can help researchers determine which collections or portions of are relevant to their research. Finding aids typically include information about the creator, an overview of what is in a collection, and container listings.

The Bancroft Library’s finding aids are part of the Online Archive of California. You will find links to digitized material from archival collections within the container list.

If an online version of the finding aid exists, you will see a link to it at the top of the OskiCat catalog record. Print copies of older finding aids are available in the Reading Room.

For collections without online finding aids, if there is a note in the OskiCat catalog record stating that a "Temporary list of contents available," please email bancref@library.berkeley.edu for a copy.
