Geometric Structures on Manifolds by
The theory of geometric structures on manifolds which are locally modeled on a homogeneous space of a Lie group traces back to Charles Ehresmann in the 1930s, although many examples had been studied previously. Such locally homogeneous geometric structures are special cases of Cartan connections where the associated curvature vanishes. This theory received a big boost in the 1970s when W. Thurston put his geometrization program for 3-manifolds in this context. The subject of this book is more ambitious in scope. Unlike Thurston's eight 3-dimensional geometries, it covers structures which are not metric structures, such as affine and projective structures. This book describes the known examples in dimensions one, two and three. Each geometry has its own special features, which provide special tools in its study. Emphasis is given to the inter-relationships between different geometries and how one kind of geometric structure induces structures modeled on a different geometry. Up to now, much of the literature has been somewhat inaccessible and the book collects many of the pieces into one unified work. This book focuses on several successful classification problems. Namely, fix a geometry in the sense of Klein and a topological manifold. Then the different ways of locally putting the geometry on the manifold lead to a "moduli space." Often the moduli space carries a rich geometry of its own reflecting the model geometry. The book is self-contained and accessible to students who have taken first-year graduate courses in topology, smooth manifolds, differential geometry and Lie groups.
How to Derive a Formula by
Will artificial intelligence solve all problems, making scientific formulae redundant? The authors of this book would argue that there is still a vital role in formulating them to make sense of the laws of nature. To derive a formula one needs to follow a series of steps; last of all, check that the result is correct, primarily through the analysis of limiting cases. The book is about unravelling this machinery. Mathematics is the "queen of all sciences," but students encounter many obstacles in learning the subject -- familiarization with the proofs of hundreds of theorems, mysterious symbols, and technical routines for which the usefulness is not obvious upfront. Those interested in the physical sciences could lose motivation, not seeing the wood for the trees. How to Derive a Formula is an attempt to engage these learners, presenting mathematical methods in simple terms, with more of an emphasis on skills as opposed to technical knowledge. Based on intuition and common sense rather than mathematical rigor, it teaches students from scratch using pertinent examples, many taken across the physical sciences. This book provides an interesting new perspective of what a mathematics textbook could be, including historical facts and humor to complement the material.
Stochastic Partial Differential Equations with Additive Gaussian Noise : Analysis and Inference by
The stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) arise in many applications of the probability theory. This monograph will focus on two particular (and probably the most known) equations: the stochastic heat equation and the stochastic wave equation. The focus is on the relationship between the solutions to the SPDEs and the fractional Brownian motion (and related processes). An important point of the analysis is the study of the asymptotic behavior of the p-variations of the solutions to the heat or wave equations driven by space-time Gaussian noise or by a Gaussian noise with a non-trivial correlation in space. The book is addressed to public with a reasonable background in probability theory. The idea is to keep it self-contained and avoid using of complex techniques. We also chose to insist on the basic properties of the random noise and to detail the construction of the Wiener integration with respect to them. The intention is to present the proofs complete and detailed.
Hörmander Operators by
Hörmander operators are a class of linear second order partial differential operators with nonnegative characteristic form and smooth coefficients, which are usually degenerate elliptic-parabolic, but nevertheless hypoelliptic, that is highly regularizing. The study of these operators began with the 1967 fundamental paper by Lars Hörmander and is intimately connected to the geometry of vector fields. Motivations for the study of Hörmander operators come for instance from Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations arising from modeling physical systems governed by stochastic equations and the geometric theory of several complex variables. The aim of this book is to give a systematic exposition of a relevant part of the theory of Hörmander operators and vector fields, together with the necessary background and prerequisites. The book is intended for self-study, or as a reference book, and can be useful to both younger and senior researchers, already working in this area or aiming to approach it.
Regression for Health and Social Science by
This textbook for students in the health and social sciences covers the basics of linear model methods with a minimum of mathematics, assuming only a pre-calculus background. Topological and Ergodic Theory of Symbolic Dynamics by
Symbolic dynamics is essential in the study of dynamical systems of various types and is connected to many other fields such as stochastic processes, ergodic theory, representation of numbers, information and coding, etc. This graduate text introduces symbolic dynamics from a perspective of topological dynamical systems and presents a vast variety of important examples. After introducing symbolic and topological dynamics, the core of the book consists of discussions of various subshifts of positive entropy, of zero entropy, other non-shift minimal action on the Cantor set, and a study of the ergodic properties of these systems. The author presents recent developments such as spacing shifts, square-free shifts, density shifts, B-free shifts, Bratteli-Vershik systems, enumeration scales, amorphic complexity, and a modern and complete treatment of kneading theory. Later, he provides an overview of automata and linguistic complexity (Chomsky's hierarchy). The necessary background for the book varies, but for most of it a solid knowledge of real analysis and linear algebra and first courses in probability and measure theory, metric spaces, number theory, topology, and set theory suffice. Most of the exercises have solutions in the back of the book.
Random Explorations by
The title Random Explorations has two meanings. First, a few topics of advanced probability are deeply explored. Second, there is a recurring theme of analyzing a random object by exploring a random path. This book is an outgrowth of lectures by the author in the University of Chicago Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) program in 2020. The idea of the course was to expose advanced undergraduates to ideas in probability research. The book begins with Markov chains with an emphasis on transient or killed chains that have finite Green's function. This function, and its inverse called the Laplacian, is discussed next to relate two objects that arise in statistical physics, the loop-erased random walk (LERW) and the uniform spanning tree (UST). A modern approach is used including loop measures and soups. Understanding these approaches as the system size goes to infinity requires a deep understanding of the simple random walk so that is studied next, followed by a look at the infinite LERW and UST. Another model, the Gaussian free field (GFF), is introduced and related to loop measure. The emphasis in the book is on discrete models, but the final chapter gives an introduction to the continuous objects: Brownian motion, Brownian loop measures and soups, Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE), and the continuous Gaussian free field. A number of exercises scattered throughout the text will help a serious reader gain better understanding of the material.
Vladimir I. Arnold - Collected Works by
This volume 6 of the Collected Works comprises 27 papers by V.I.Arnold, one of the most outstanding mathematicians of all times, written in 1991 to 1995. During this period Arnold's interests covered Vassiliev's theory of invariants and knots, invariants and bifurcations of plane curves; combinatorics of Bernoulli, Euler and Springer numbers; geometry of wave fronts, the Berry phase and quantum Hall effect. The articles include a list of problems in dynamical systems, a discussion of the problem of (in)solvability of equations, papers on symplectic geometry of caustics and contact geometry of wave fronts, comments on problems of A.D.Sakharov, as well as a rather unusual paper on projective topology. The interested reader will certainly enjoy Arnold's 1994 paper on mathematical problems in physics with the opening by-now famous phrase "Mathematics is the name for those domains of theoretical physics that are temporarily unfashionable." The book will be of interest to the wide audience, from college students to professionals in mathematics or physics and in the history of science. The volume also includes translations of two interviews given by Arnold to the French and Spanish media. One can see how worried he was about the fate of Russian and world mathematics and science in general.
Norbert Wiener by
Norbert Wiener (1894-1964) is well known by the general public as the founder of Cybernetics, by mathematicians as one of the first north-American mathematicians who win international prestige - as the person who formalized Brownian motion, solved the Zaremba problem and was the author of two seminal papers devoted to Generalized Harmonic Analysis and Tauberian Theorems - and by engineers as the person who proposed much of the Fourier analysis used by them and contributed to the foundation of the statistical theory of communication - which includes the use of wave filter theory, information theory and prediction theory in control and communications as well as the automation of all types of electronic devices. Wiener's research, which was frequently motivated by physics, engineering, or biology, was a clever mixture of Fourier analysis and probability theory. His contributions to electronics through his work on filtering (that is, the separation of noise from a message), and the theory of prediction made him very valuable to electronics engineering. In addition, Wiener addressed many other topics, including the formalization of the Brownian motion, ergodic theory, wave filter theory, and information theory. Taking all these ingredients together, he ventured to create a new scientific paradigm: cybernetics. This book contains a detailed explanation of Wiener's life, his many colleagues, and the historical context in which he lived, as well as Wiener's work. It also contains a large appendix about "Wiener, Shannon, and the rise of a Digital World." The main focus of the book is on Wiener's work related to electrical and electronic engineering and the way he used his mathematics to create the main concepts and techniques of the statistical theory of communication. In particular, the author presents Wiener surrounded by the engineers that worked at MIT with whom he maintained strong contact. It was in this atmosphere that information theory arose, and Wiener was a main influence on the people who developed that theory.
Continuous Symmetries and Integrability of Discrete Equations by
This book on integrable systems and symmetries presents new results on applications of symmetries and integrability techniques to the case of equations defined on the lattice. This relatively new field has many applications, for example, in describing the evolution of crystals and molecular systems defined on lattices, and in finding numerical approximations for differential equations preserving their symmetries. The book contains three chapters and five appendices. The first chapter is an introduction to the general ideas about symmetries, lattices, differential difference and partial difference equations and Lie point symmetries defined on them. Chapter 2 deals with integrable and linearizable systems in two dimensions. The authors start from the prototype of integrable and linearizable partial differential equations, the Korteweg de Vries and the Burgers equations. Then they consider the best known integrable differential difference and partial difference equations. Chapter 3 considers generalized symmetries and conserved densities as integrability criteria. The appendices provide details which may help the readers' understanding of the subjects presented in Chapters 2 and 3. This book is written for PhD students and early researchers, both in theoretical physics and in applied mathematics, who are interested in the study of symmetries and integrability of difference equations.

Inverse Problems and Zero Forcing for Graphs by
This book provides an introduction to the inverse eigenvalue problem for graphs (IEP-G) and the related area of zero forcing, propagation, and throttling. The IEP-G grew from the intersection of linear algebra and combinatorics and has given rise to both a rich set of deep problems in that area as well as a breadth of "ancillary'' problems in related areas. The IEP-G asks a fundamental mathematical question expressed in terms of linear algebra and graph theory, but the significance of such questions goes beyond these two areas, as particular instances of the IEP-G also appear as major research problems in other fields of mathematics, sciences and engineering. One approach to the IEP-G is through rank minimization, a relevant problem in itself and with a large number of applications.
