While we often think of objects as conceived by human minds and formed by human hands, things affect us as much as we affect them. Objects demand specific attention, such as the care required to maintain a car. As objects move from one context to another, they also have multiple lives. As they pass through generations, they have further stories to tell.
You have the opportunity with this exhibit to learn about the ancient and modern biographies of objects that are drawn from across campus. The Center for the Tebtunis Papyri is custodian of the largest collection of papyrus fragments in the United States, and the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology houses an extensive collection of artifacts excavated in Egypt and beyond. These materials are shared today owing to the foresight of Phoebe Apperson Hearst, who sponsored excavations in Egypt from 1899 to 1905. Mrs. Hearst’s archive at The Bancroft Library offers a personal look at her investment in papyrology and archaeology for the University of California, Berkeley.
Through the artifacts on display, we invite you to explore the biographies of objects from their creation thousands of years ago up through their later lives as they traveled from Egypt to Berkeley. On their journey these objects generate and interact with new artifacts: The letter of an excavator may describe a roll of papyrus, for example, or a photograph capture its likeness as it emerges from the ground.
Objects weave their lives into our own. Their biographies can tell good stories and bad. As you walk through this exhibit, consider what lessons these objects teach. How are you adding to their stories, and how do they add to yours?
نعتقد غالباً ان الاشياء تصنعها ايدىنا وتدركها عقولنا، الا انها كثيرا ما تؤثر فينا كما نؤثر فيها. الاشياء تتطلب رعايه مثلما نعتنى بالسيارة على سبيل المثال. وكلما تحركت الاشياء من سياق تاريخى الى سياق او مكان اخر تتعد قصص حياتها. وبانتقال الأشياء عبر الأجيال، تزداد القصص التى ترويها لنا.
نقدم فى هذا المعرض فرصة للتعرف على قصص قديمة وحديثة لحياة أشياء أو قطع أثريه جُمعت من أقسام مختلفة في جامعة كاليفورنيا بركلى. بالتحديد مركز "تبتونس للبرديات" والذى يضم أكبر مجموعة برديات فى الولايات المتحدة، وكذلك يضم المعرض قطع من "متحف هرست للعلوم الانسانية او الانثروبولوجى" والذى يضم مجموعه كبيرة من القطع الأثريه المكتشفه من مصرومن مواقع أخرى. نشارككم اليوم هذه القطع بفضل النظرة المستقبلية للسيدة " فيبى ابرسون هرست" والتى دعمت مادياً الحفائر الأثرية فى مصرمنذ عام 1899 وحتى عام 1905. يضم أرشيف "هرست" بمكتبة " بانكروفت" الملفات التى تلقى الضوء على شخصيتها واستثمار جهودها فى مجال علم البرديات والاثار من اجل جامعة كاليفورنيا بركلى.
والان ندعوكم من خلال هذا العرض للقطع الأثريه لاستكتشاف قصص حياة هذه القطع منذ نشاتها من آلالف السنين وحتى رحلة خروجها من مصر ووصولها إلى بركلى. خلال رحلتها، تتفاعل هذه القطع مع قطع أثرية أخرى، أو يتنج عنها قطع أخرى: على سبيل المثال، قد يصف خطاب المكستشف الأثرى لفافة البردى مع صورة لحالتها أثناء خروجها من الأرض لحظة الإكتشاف.
تدمج هذه القطع حياتها بحياتنا. وحياتها تقص علينا حكايات منها الإيجابية ومنها السلبيه. أثناء تجولكم هذا العرض ندعوكم للتفكر فى أى الدروس تحكيها هذه القطع، وكيف تضيفون أنتم إلى قصص حياة هذه القطع، وكيف تضيف هذه القطع إلى قصة حياتكم.
Ενώ συχνά σκεφτόμαστε ότι τα αντικείμενα είναι σχεδιασμένα από ανθρώπινο νου και φτιαγμένα από ανθρώπινα χέρια, τείνουμε να ξεχνάμε ότι τα αντικείμενα επίσης διαμορφώνουν τους ανθρώπους· τα πράγματα τόσο μάς επηρεάζουν όσο και επηρεάζονται από εμάς. Τα αντικείμενα απαιτούν ιδιαίτερη προσοχή, όπως ακριβώς η φροντίδα που απαιτείται για τη συντήρηση ενός αυτοκινήτου. Καθώς τα αντικείμενα αλλάζουν συμφραζόμενα, αποκτούν πολλαπλές ζωές. Καθώς περνούν από γενιά σε γενιά, έχουν περισσότερες ιστορίες να διηγηθούν.
Σε αυτήν την έκθεση, θα έχετε την ευκαιρία να μάθετε για τις αρχαίες και σύγχρονες βιογραφίες αντικειμένων τα οποία προέρχονται από όλη την πανεπιστημιούπολη. Το Center for the Tebtunis Papyri είναι θεματοφύλακας της μεγαλύτερης συλλογής σπαραγμάτων παπύρου στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και το Μουσείο Ανθρωπολογίας Phoebe A. Hearst στεγάζει μια εκτεταμένη συλλογή έργων τέχνης, τα οποία ανασκάφηκαν τόσο στην Αίγυπτο όσο και έξω από αυτήν. Αυτά τα αντικείμενα εκτίθενται σήμερα χάρη στην προνοητικότητα της Phoebe Apperson Hearst, η οποία χρηματοδότησε ανασκαφές στην Αίγυπτο από το 1899 έως το 1905. Μέσα από τα εκθέματα σάς προσκαλούμε να διερευνήσετε τις βιογραφίες των αντικειμένων από τη δημιουργία τους πριν από χιλιάδες χρόνια μέχρι τις μεταγενέστερες ζωές τους καθώς ταξίδευαν από την Αίγυπτο στο Berkeley. Κατά το ταξίδι τους αυτά τα αντικείμενα δημιουργούν και αλληλοεπιδρούν με νέα αντικείμενα: Για παράδειγμα, το γράμμα ενός ανασκαφέα πιθανόν να περιγράψει ένα παπύρινο κύλινδρο ενώ μια φωτογραφία θα μπορούσε να καταγράψει τη μορφή του καθώς αναδύεται από το έδαφος.
Τα αντικείμενα συνυφαίνουν τη ζωή τους με τη δική μας. Οι βιογραφίες τους μπορούν να φανερώσουν καλές ιστορίες αλλά και κακές. Καθώς προχωράτε στην έκθεση, σκεφτείτε τι μαθήματα μας διδάσκουν αυτά τα αντικείμενα. Πώς εσείς αλληλεπιδράτε με τις ιστορίες τους και πώς αυτά αλληλεπιδρούν με τη δική σας ιστορία;
