Chemistry and Chemical Engineering: Software + Technology

Find information resources in Chemistry and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering

ChemDraw

ChemDraw is a drawing tool to create publication-ready, scientific drawings in chemistry and biology.

For its members, the College of Chemistry has purchased a site license for ChemDraw Professional.

Follow these directions to install your personal copy.

Cambridge Structural Database System (CSDS)

The Cambridge Structural Database System (CSDS) client version is a repository for small-molecule organic and metal-organic crystal structures from x-ray and neutron diffraction studies. The desktop client version is available for download to UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff, and to LBNL researchers:

CSDS is developed and maintained by the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC).

Electronic lab notebooks

The College of Chemistry has a site license to Signals Notebook, an electronic lab notebook from Revvity Signals. To get access to the software, see the instructions from the Molecular Graphics and Computation Facility.

Note: if you used Signals Notebook prior to 2024, you will have to manually migrate your files once you are added to the UC Berkeley College of Chemistry's license portal.

See the research guide below for more information on electronic lab notebooks at UC Berkeley:

Software, programming, and technology workshops

D-Lab offers workshops on statistical software, programming in R and Python, citation managers, and other technology tools.

Computational Chemistry and Molecular Graphics

The Molecular Graphics and Computation Facility (MGCF) in the College of Chemistry provides high-performance computing resources for research and educational uses in the chemistry and related disciplines. The MGCF workspace in 175 Tan Hall includes 12 workstations with software for computational chemistry, chemoinformatics, and molecular graphics. See the full list of software available on MGCF workstations

To request a login, access the MGCF, and for all other inquiries, please reach out to mgcf@berkeley.edu.

Software/Hardware

Software Central (UCB)
As a UCB student you can download Berkeley-licensed software, including Adobe Creative Cloud, LastPass Premium, MATLAB, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Project, SAS, SPSS, Stata, and Tableau for free.
