  • There are over 22 million registered voters in CA alone.
  • Ensuring all votes cast by eligible voters are accurately processed and counted takes time.
  •  In the hours and days after polls close, states publish unofficial results that news outlets use to project winners.
  • News media projections are based on the determination that the number of ballots left to count will not include enough votes to overtake the leading candidate or ballot measure.
  • You can read how the Associated Press (AP) declares the winners and how other media outlets "call the election".
  • However, the Canvas (ballot counting) takes county election officials weeks!  By law county officials have 30 days before the CA Secretary of State certifies the results.

Remain engaged with your elected officials!

You elected them, so be sure to follow their actions and make your voice heard—whether you agree or disagree with their work!
