What's HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service?

During extended Library closures (such as the COVID-19 lockdown), we may be able to offer access to scans of books in our print collection through HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access Service. You can view scans of books online in a web browser. The service is open only to current UC Berkeley faculty, students, and staff.

How do I view a book online?

  1. Go to the HathiTrust website:
  2. Click Log In.
  3. From the "Choose your partner institution" drop-down menu, search "Berkeley."
  4. Choose "University of California, Berkeley" and click Continue.
  5. You will see a CalNet ID login page. Enter your credentials.
  6. You will see a Data Privacy agreement. Choose your preference and click Accept.
  7. You will be returned to the HathiTrust homepage. Below the search box, next to "Full view only," remove the checkmark.
  8. Enter your keywords and click Search HathiTrust.
  9. Under the book you desire to view, click "Temporary Access."
  10. Click "Check Out."
  11. You will now have access to the scanned book for one hour, after which it will renew automatically, provided you are active and other patrons are not waiting.

Reading for a Class?

If you're "sharing" a book with other students in your class, close out the tab after you finish reading so other students can access the book.

Books Under Copyright

  • eBooks cannot be downloaded.
  • eBooks may have been scanned many years ago. As a result, some may not have been OCRd, or may have a lower quality OCR, than you might be used to.
  • The number of ebook copies available to us will match the number of print copies in our physical collection. For example, if we own 3 print copies of the book, the ebook will be available simultaneously to no more than 3 users.
  • It is not possible to recall or put holds on eBooks.
  • Because of the speed and scale with which HathiTrust has worked to make these books available, there may be instances where an individual book you're looking for is not available, even though the Library owns it in print.
  • At this time, the HathiTrust copies of these eBooks are not in OskiCat. We recommend you instead go to the HathiTrust website directly.
  • eBooks will be available through this service only while the physical Library is closed for an extended period of time. (Check the Library website for updates.)
