Counter-mapping: Challenging our perspective on space and community

  • Wednesday, September 17, 2025
  • Exhibit open 12:30 - 2 pm
  • Brief remarks at 12:30 pm by guest curator, Gerónimo Barrera de la Torre, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography

How do the maps created within traditional power structures reflect your understanding of the world, and how do they shape it? People and communities around the world–from the very local to the global–are responding to those questions with counter-cartography. Counter-maps and counter-atlases center a decolonial, quilombola, feminist, indigenous-centered approach to mapmaking. Join us to explore physical and digital examples of counter-mapping at the UC Berkeley Earth Sciences & Map Library.
